'Stop spying on people!': Syrian Cypherpunks Hack Skype

RT: Syrian computer hacker conglomerate, the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA), has kicked off the New Year with a number of cyber-attacks, compromising Skype’s Twitter, Facebook accounts, and its official blog.
Social media accounts belonging to Skype, Microsoft’s voice-over-IP service, were hacked around 19:30 GMT. SEA posted on Skype's Twitter account a rogue message saying "Stop spying on people! via Syrian Electronic Army." The hacker group also urged people not to use Microsoft accounts because the company is “selling the data to the governments.”
SEA later re-tweeted the message using its own twitter page.

Feminist Cathy Young Takes Aim and Fires: Side of Barn Still Safe + The Men's Human Rights Movement is On Fire and Kicking Ass with the Truth! MGTOW

By Cathy Young, an opinion writer often quoted in the men’s rights community for her frequent criticism of victim feminism, has offered up a superficially sterling New Year’s resolution on the pages of realclearpolitics.com. Acknowledging the heightened awareness of the men’s rights community that operates in general defiance of feminist dogma, she expresses the hope that we can move toward a unified movement more centered on gender equity.
She delivered the message from the on high perspective of an informed and experienced social commentator:

Top wish for 2014: a “true equality” movement.  In 2013, there was a fair amount of attention to men’s rights groups—which often raise legitimate issues but have a regrettable tendency to mirror the gender antagonism, hyperbole, and victim mentality of radical feminism.  But, with men’s issues on the table, perhaps the next year will see more calls for a balanced approach that promotes fairness and goodwill toward both sexes.  That would make a good, if optimistic, New Year’s resolution.
That would also be a crock of shit.

Four Key Lessons From 2013

Santiago, Chile
1) Politicians believe there are no consequences for destroying our liberty
Stimulus and response. That’s the easiest way of summing this up. When politicians steal, and there are no consequences, they’re going to keep stealing.
Cyprus proved this point handily. The government froze bank accounts for everyone in the country (of course, the big bosses got their money out in time). And yet, there was no violent revolution in the streets. People just accepted it.

Two of Your Favorite Apps Were Hacked Already This Year

And the iPhone. The best surveillance device to date. Aiming to put your freedom... in the cross hairs" of the NSA.
By Tim Parker: 2014 isn’t off to a good start for two of the world’s favorite apps. Reports have emerged that Skype and Snapchat were hacked.
First Snapchat. The company has confirmed that the popular photo messaging app was hacked and the perpetrators posted a database containing the user names and phone numbers of 4.6 million accounts.
On New Year’s Eve, a website called SnapchatDB.info went online and offered for download the database of the usernames and phone numbers of Snapchat accounts. The good news is that the last two digits of the phone numbers were blacked out.
The site said, “This database contains username and phone number pairs of a vast majority of the Snapchat users. This information was acquired through the recently patched Snapchat exploit and is being shared with the public to raise awareness on the issue.”

Monty The Cab Driver’s Lying Circus

By John Ward: There was one of those ‘review of the year’ spots on BBC propaganda channel last night, in which the once cutting-edge field reporter but now neutered newsdesk John Simpson was talking to BBCNews political correspondent Nick Robinson and two other vaguely familiar bubble-heads. At one point, the conversation went like this:
nickmontytitleJS: Well anyway, the government wanted to intervene in Syria, but didn’t get the vote…
BH1: That’s true, but I think once more pictures of starving Syrian children come in, that might change…
BH2: Yes, and don’t forget we know Assad was encouraged in his use of chemical weapons by Iran…
NR: Well, had the vote been won by Cameron, the Coalition would’ve broken up, but then Iran’s role is….
JS: …the thing with Iran is, you never quite know when they’re going to change the rules….
BH2: Yes but nevertheless I think we should be encouraged by the Iranian change of attitude of late….
BH1: Yes that’s very encouraging…
JS: Anyway, moving on, is Sir Alex Ferguson the greatest living Briton?
I felt like I was watching an old Python Sketch about Mrs Sartre chewing the fat with Mrs Kant.

Diluting Ass With Fox - Walmart's Latest Chinese Food Scandal

Tyler Durden's picture "We are deeply sorry for this whole affair," said Wal-Mart's China president after the world's largest retailer recalled donkey meat sold at some outlets in China after tests showed the product contained the DNA of other animals - including fox. "It is a deep lesson (for us) that we need to continue to increase investment in supplier management," repeat-offender Wal-Mart added as Reuters reports the tainted "five-spice" donkey meat may mean "wealthy shoppers will start to lose the trust [in Wal-Mart's brand] they had before." Donkey meat is a popular snack in some areas of China, but as one bemused customer noted, oddly, "Isn't fox meat more expensive than donkey meat anyway?"

Via Reuters,

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, has recalled donkey meat sold at some outlets in China after tests showed the product contained the DNA of other animals, the U.S. company said.

Wal-Mart will reimburse customers who bought the tainted "Five Spice" donkey meat

2014 Will Bring More Social Collapse

By Paul Craig Roberts: 2014 is upon us. For a person who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1961, a year in which the class ring showed the same date right side up or upside down, the 21st century was a science fiction concept associated with Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.” To us George Orwell’s 1984 seemed so far in the future we would never get there. Now it is 30 years in the past.
Did we get there in Orwell’s sense? In terms of surveillance technology, we are far beyond Orwell’s imagination. In terms of the unaccountability of government, we exceptional and indispensable people now live a 1984 existence. In his alternative to the Queen’s Christmas speech, Edward Snowden made the point that a person born in the 21st century will never experience privacy. For new generations the word privacy will refer to something mythical, like a unicorn.

Snapchat Is Far From Anonymous: 4.6 Million Users Have Personal Info Released

By End the Lie: Snapchat, which was thought to be a private messaging app for the iPhone, exposed some 4.6 million users after hackers released a database with apparent Snapchat usernames and partial phone numbers.
The exploit that enabled the usernames and phone numbers to be released was reportedly brought to the Snapchat company months ago to no avail.
On Christmas Day, ZDNet reported that Gibson Security, the group of hackers that discovered the exploit, notified Snapchat of the problem in August.
Gibson Security published a security advisory the same month after Snapchat did not respond or take action.
The exploit could have been fixed by “ten lines of code” and would have never appeared “if they followed best practices and focused on security (which they should be, considering the use cases of the app),” Gibson Security said.
In its Christmas release, Gibson Security also alleged that Snapchat’s statements to investors and the press are entirely false.
Two days after the Gibson Security release, the company downplayed the hack and said they “recently added additional counter-measures and continue to make improvements to combat spam and abuse.”
Yet the database, known as SnapchatDB, was still published publicly
